I thought monad meant something like totality (of the self) like through space time, but those mathemagicians have occulted it with computations and programming.
...First: The term monad is a bit vacuous if you are not a mathematician. An alternative term is computation builder which is a bit more descriptive of what they are actually useful for. You ask for practical examples: Example 1: List comprehension: [x*2 | x<-[1..10], odd x] This expression returns the doubles of all odd numbers in the range from 1 to 10. Very useful!

The first 3 series's's's are the best, the books are better, they get a bit shaky after (haven't read any books based on after series 3). Also recommended are the Culture series by Iain M. Banks.
